One of the most evocative examples is 杜牧 (Du Mu, 803–852)’s short but profoundly moving poem 《清明》(“Qingming”), written during China’s Tomb-Sweeping Festival.

唐·杜牧清明时节雨纷纷，
路上行人欲断魂。
借问酒家何处有？
牧童遥指杏花村。
English Translation:
“On Qingming, the rain drizzles endlessly,
Travelers on the road are heavy with grief.
‘Where might a tavern be found to drown my sorrows?’
A cowherd points to Apricot Blossom Village afar.”
The Meaning: Grief, Solace, and the Search for Comfort
- “Rain drizzles endlessly” (雨纷纷) – The constant rain mirrors the unending sorrow of those remembering the dead. In Chinese culture, rain during Qingming is almost symbolic, representing tears from heaven.
- “Travelers… heavy with grief” (欲断魂) – The festival is a time for ancestor worship, and the poet captures the deep sadness of those far from home, unable to visit family graves.
- “Where might a tavern be found?” (借问酒家何处有) – The speaker seeks solace in wine, a common motif in Chinese poetry to express emotional pain.

The Qingming Festival: A Day of Remembrance
Qingming (清明节), or Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese festival (around April 4–6) where families:
